In order to more efficiently detect dangerous gas leaks within the Space Shuttle main engine compartments, Shuttle engineers devised a long-range leak detector using off-the-shelf components. This leak detector provides a higher degree of reliability and capability than other leak detectors by using state-of-the-art circuitry, improved transducers, and a unique collecting horn. The commercial applications of the detector hardware include: pipelines, underground utilities, air-conditioning systems, petrochemical systems, power transmission lines, and in medical devices.
